In layman’s terms, the front side can be printed on, but the back side cannot; “single copper” has coated surfaces on both sides, and both sides can be printed on. “Gray background gray board” is a type of paper, but it is not used for packaging boxes; “gray background white board” is what is known as “gray copper paper,” meaning the front side is white and can be printed on, while the back side is gray and cannot be printed on. Generally, white card is also referred to as “white background white board” paper, which is the standard term used in general quotations (except for special white cards, such as platinum and silver cards).

White cardboard, black cardboard
White cardboard is versatile and is frequently used for cosmetics packaging, pharmaceutical packaging, cigarette packaging, wine packaging, and food packaging. Its characteristics include the paper’s strength and thickness, high whiteness, smooth or rough surface, good printability, good ink absorption, and high gloss. This paper is generally the preferred choice for printing cosmetic pouches. The reasons for this are: First, the paper does not lose ink easily during printing; second, it is sturdy, crease-resistant, and tear-resistant; and third, it has a high density. In addition to these advantages, white and black cardboard are suitable for various surface treatment processes. Common manufacturing processes include lamination, varnishing, hot gold/hot silver, hot blue, red, green gold, convex embossing, UV embossing, etc. For the production of mask boxes, bright white cardboard can also be die-cut into various box structures to achieve the desired packaging effect.
Gold cardstock, silver cardstock, laser-printed gold cardstock, and gold cardstock in various colors
Gold and silver cardstock is frequently used for mask packaging. There is also a wide selection available for the inner packaging of cosmetics, the outer packaging of boxes, and the packaging of toiletries—such as toothpaste, health products, medications, and gift packaging. Gold and silver cardstock is characterized by its refined, elegant appearance. Gold and silver cardstock is a specialty paper. It is produced by laminating a layer of gold- and silver-colored aluminum foil onto white cardstock. Printing on gold-printed cardboard is somewhat more complex due to the nature of the material. Quick-drying ink is required for printing. Since the surface of gold and silver cardboard is slightly scratch-resistant, lamination is necessary in the subsequent process. After lamination, surface embossing, debossing, hot stamping, UV coating, and other processes are applied. The production costs for gold and silver cardstock are slightly higher than for standard white cardstock. However, to boost sales and enhance the product’s aesthetic appeal, it may be worthwhile to use gold and silver cardstock or to choose other shades of gold cardstock.
Kraft Paper and Specialty Paper
Kraft paper offers advantages such as toughness, tear resistance, and good water resistance. However, its surface is loose and somewhat rough. Printing is usually done in single-color black. For four-color or spot-color printing, the print quality may be slightly inferior to that of other papers due to the paper’s yellow color. If hot stamping and UV coating without lamination are not performed during post-processing, the hot stamping may be incomplete or impossible because the paper’s surface is not smooth and is sensitive. Surface treatment after lamination is therefore preferable.
International cosmetic packaging for major brands often uses specialty paper. Specialty papers include embossed paper with various surface textures, shimmering pearlescent paper in different colors, textured paper, colored corrugated paper, and so on. Cosmetics packaging or packaging boxes made from specialty paper are of very high quality. They can be printed in color and, during post-processing, directly hot-stamped, embossed, etc.
General mask packaging boxes or custom cosmetic packaging boxes are usually made of white cardboard and gold or silver cardboard with a paper weight of 350 g or 400 g. The box is typically designed as a slip-on box. Depending on the total weight of the mask and the weight of the skincare product, the base can be reinforced. The base can be designed as a hook-bottom box (adhesive on the bottom increases load-bearing capacity) or as a self-closing box. In terms of packaging technology, white cardboard can be hot-stamped, UV-coated, embossed, and formed into concave or convex shapes after lamination. Art paper can be screen-printed and hot-stamped directly. Gold-foil cardboard can be hot-stamped, UV-coated, embossed, and formed into concave or convex shapes after lamination.
Method and Process for Manufacturing Cosmetic Packaging Boxes
Cosmetic packaging can be divided into mid-range and high-end categories. The manufacturing methods and processes for cosmetic packaging must be inextricably linked to several standard processes. But no matter how things change, the fundamentals remain the same. Every piece of cosmetic packaging, product packaging, or gift packaging undergoes the following processes before it is manufactured. So what do the production procedures, methods, and processes look like?
The first and most important step in cosmetic packaging is printing. The printer uses offset printing (commonly known as color printing). Color printing involves achieving the desired color effect by mixing four primary colors: magenta, yellow, cyan, and black inks. Special gold, special silver, special red, and other such colors fall under the category of special color printing. In addition to standard offset printing, the printing method must be adjusted to accommodate the specific characteristics of the printing material. For example, various types of gold-coated cardboard require UV printing. The more special colors included in the design files provided by customers, the higher the printing cost will be. When printing cosmetic color boxes, adding gold and silver accents is also a technique used to enhance the premium look. Before printing, the following steps must be completed. First, select or design the box structure for the paper packaging box. If customers provide samples, the box can be produced according to those samples. Why design the box structure first? Because the die-cutting process occurs later in the paper box production process, and this ensures the box structure meets standard specifications. Before designing, you can create the artwork based on the designed cut lines. After designing and confirming the file, you must first create the printing plates. Four-color printing requires four screens, and each spot color requires a separate spot color plate. The more spot colors used, the more plates are needed.
Procedure
Surface treatment is required after printing. Laminating and varnishing protect the printed surface from scratches and are common production and finishing processes. For example, in the manufacture of colored cardboard, when gray cardboard is printed in darker colors, the entire surface appears dull and old-fashioned without a varnish finish. After varnishing, however, the printed surface has an overall glossy finish and looks as good as new. However, varnishing is rarely used for cosmetic packaging. Instead, processes such as lamination, hot stamping, hot silvering, UV printing, embossing, etc., are used to make the packaging look more high-quality and exclusive.
Punching
Die-cutting is a necessary process before applying adhesive to boxes. The box structure selected prior to the design of the artwork is processed into a die plate. During die-cutting, the die plate is installed on the die-cutting machine. After the professional die-cutting specialist has aligned the position and corners, the box is die-cut into an unfolded shape according to the die plate’s form. The dimensional tolerance during die-cutting is approximately 1 mm, which is within the normal range.
Insert boxes
After die-cutting, the unusable edges and corners are removed from the printed surface. In the next step, the box is glued into shape. When assembling the box, the position of the glue lines must be carefully aligned. Products with high and low lines (where the top and bottom lines are not aligned) and bulges (where the glue line extends beyond the glue position line) are considered non-conforming. Manufacturers conduct random inspections when assembling boxes. Qualified products can be packaged and shipped to customers for use.
If we want to customize cosmetic packaging based on this, we first select common paper materials such as bright white cardboard, various gold and silver cardstock, or laser-printable cardboard, as well as specialty paper made from recycled cardboard with different print textures. The weight is typically 350 grams. We then select the finishing process. Common production methods include: White cardboard is coated with a matte film and then hot-stamped with gold, silver, or laser effects. Logos or other patterns are embossed using embossing techniques. Gold cardstock must be coated before the surface undergoes UV treatment. Standard art paper can be coated directly with UV light and then hot-stamped or treated using other methods as required. The specific process steps can be customized according to the customer’s individual requirements. A slipcase is typically used as the box type. Folding boxes and hook-and-loop boxes are also common. Airplane boxes are suitable for gift packaging or complete cosmetic packaging. They are recommended for lightweight cosmetics.
