Labeling machines, shrink-wrapping machines, sealing machines, and strapping machines perform important functions on the packaging line, optimizing efficiency and ensuring product integrity. From applying labels to containers to tightly shrinking film around products to securing cartons for transport, these machines help improve packaging quality and optimize production. Understanding the functions, types, and applications of each machine is crucial for companies seeking to improve their packaging processes and meet industry standards.

Labeling Machine

A labeling machine is a machine that applies labels—containing the food product’s name, ingredients, functions, instructions for use and opening, brand logos, etc.—to a specific location on the packaging container. See the illustration of the labeling machine.
There are many types of labeling machines, depending on the packaging purpose, the type of packaging container used, and the type of labeling adhesive.

Commonly used labeling machines are classified as follows:
(1) Depending on the degree of automation of the process, they are classified as semi-automatic labeling machines and automatic labeling machines.

(2) Depending on the type of container, they can be classified into labeling machines for round cans made of thin tin-plated steel sheet, labeling machines for glass bottles and cans, etc.

(3) Depending on the direction of the container's movement, they can be classified as horizontal or vertical labeling machines. (4) Depending on the container's movement pattern, they can be classified as continuous-feed labeling machines or turntable labeling machines.

Commonly used labeling machines are as follows: (1) Portal labeling machine; (2) Labeling machine with rotating fork; (3) Labeling and pressure-sealing machine with vacuum suction function; (4) Rotary labeling machine; (5) Vacuum drum labeling machine, etc.

Portal Labeling Machine

As shown in the figure, the label is stored in the label box 2; it is pressed down by the weight 3 and slides down the ramp. The label feed roller 1 rotates continuously and picks up the labels one at a time. They pass downward through the label feed roller 4 and the coating roller 5, are coated with adhesive, and are then fed into the label discharge guide 8, where they are held upright. When the bottle is guided by the conveyor belt through the portal—i.e., the label discharge guide—the label is carried along with the bottle, passes through the channel between the two rows of brushes 10, and is smoothed onto the bottle’s surface by the brush.

This labeling machine is only suitable for applying labels with a width that is approximately half the circumference of the bottle. It is not suitable for labels that are too wide or too narrow and can only be used on cylindrical bottles. Its production capacity is approximately 1,500 to 1,800 bottles per hour, making it suitable for small and medium-sized food processing plants.
Labeling machine with a rotating fork
As shown in the figure, the rotating fork 7 rotates intermittently. In the position shown in the figure, it is coated with glue by the glue roller 6, roller 5, and the coating roller 3 in the glue reservoir 2. When the rotating fork turns upward, a label is retrieved from the label container 4. When the fork turns downward, the bottle pusher 1 pushes the bottle through the fork and then uses the brush to adhere the label to the bottle body.

Vacuum Label Suction and Press Labeling Machine
The figure shows a vacuum label suction head 1, a label box 3, one glue roller 5 and one glue roller 6, a pressure pad 8, and a guide rail 11. The label suction head moves left and right along the guide rail and is limited by the buffer blocks 9 and 10. When the suction head is in the left-hand end position, the vacuum is activated and a label is drawn from the label box. To ensure that only one label is drawn in at a time, a nozzle 4 and a comb 2 are located on the upper part of the label box. After the label is picked up, the label suction head moves to the right, and the glue rollers 6 and 5 apply adhesive to the label during this movement. When the suction head reaches the block 9, it stops and lowers to transfer the label to the bottle. The vacuum is turned off, the label is secured to the bottle, the label suction head returns, and the pressure pad 8 lowers, with the rubberized pressure pad pressing the label onto the bottle. The labeling machine has a production capacity of 2,400 bottles per hour and is highly adaptable.
Rotary Labeling Machine
It consists of a bottle feeding mechanism, a vertical turntable, a labeling mechanism, a label dispenser, and a clamping device, as shown in the figure. When it rotates to a specific position, the adhesive application, labeling, and stabilizing processes are completed, and the bottles are then discharged via the conveyor belt.
Vacuum Drum Labeling Machine
Operating process: Bottles and cans are conveyed by the plate conveyor belt 1, and then the bottles, arranged in rows, are spaced apart at a specific interval and fed to the vacuum drum 3 by the bottle feeding screw 2. When the bottles pass through the bottle feeding screw 2, the “no bottle, no label” sensor is triggered, and the circuit is disconnected. At this point, the label box 6 performs a combined swinging and moving motion to remove the labels. The vacuum drum 3 rotates counterclockwise, and there are six labeling sections on the cylindrical surface of the drum.

Each section has a group of vacuum ports used for label removal. The vacuum is turned on and off by moving the slide valve in the vacuum drum. When bottles are fed into the machine, the label box 6 approaches the drum, and the roller on the label box’s mounting bracket contacts the valve of the vacuum drum’s slide. This connects the vacuum drum to the corresponding vacuum port on the label box and draws a label from the attached label box 6. The label box then moves away from the drum, and the label section passes through the code printing device 5 and the glue application device 4. The manufacturing date and the appropriate amount of glue are printed onto the label. The drum continues to rotate, and the glue-coated label meets the bottle fed by the bottle conveyor screw 2. Therefore, the speed of the bottle conveyor screw should be optimally matched to the rotational speed of the drum so that the bottle and the drum’s labeling station align precisely. At this point, the valve in the drum switches the vacuum label suction port from the vacuum connection to a direct connection to the atmosphere. The label loses its vacuum suction, detaches from the vacuum drum, and adheres to the bottle. When the bottle and label meet, the bottle becomes wedged between the rubber part of the drum and the foam rubber 8. Driven by the friction of the drum, the bottle begins to rotate around its own axis, and the label is rolled onto the bottle.
The labeled bottle is transported further forward by the plate conveyor and enters the channel formed by the friction conveyor 7 and the second sponge rubber pad. The bottle is pushed forward, and the label is rolled out so that it lies flatter and tighter.

Shrink-wrapping machine

In so-called shrink wrapping (also known as heat-shrink wrapping), heat-shrinkable plastic film is used as a packaging material to wrap items. The packaging is then quickly passed through a box-shaped heating chamber (a shrink tunnel) at a specific high temperature. As a result of the rapid heat treatment, the packaging film shrinks on its own by a specific ratio and conforms tightly to the packaged item, which facilitates transport or sale.

It is evident that the performance of plastic films plays a crucial role in shrink packaging. Plastic films are typically manufactured through extrusion, calendering, and solvent casting. Shrink films are films (or tubular films) produced in this manner and subsequently stretched multiple times in the longitudinal or transverse direction, so that the molecular chain or the specific crystal plane of the film aligns parallel to the film surface, which increases its strength and transparency. At the same time, when the film is stretched at a specific temperature, its stretch ratio before solidification increases to 1:4 to 1:7 (the stretch ratio of conventional films is 1:2), giving the film the required heat-shrink performance during packaging.
Shrink films are broadly classified into two categories based on their manufacturing process and intended use: In one category, the film’s elongation in the longitudinal and transverse directions is nearly equal during processing. This is referred to as biaxially stretched shrink film. In the other category, the film is stretched in only one direction during manufacturing. This is referred to as uniaxial stretch shrink film.
Biaxially oriented films have a very wide range of applications and can be used for packaging fresh foods or food trays, etc. Uniaxially oriented films are frequently used for shrink packaging and tubular film label packaging, for example, for label packaging on wine containers, sealed packaging with plastic and glass bottle caps, and tubular packaging with sleeves for fresh fruits and vegetables.
There are three methods of shrink wrapping: (1) overlap shrink wrapping; (2) sleeve shrink wrapping; (3) lid shrink wrapping
There are two methods for heating shrink wrap: a shrink tunnel and a heat gun.

Shrink-wrapping method
(1) Overlap method. As shown in Figures (1) and (2), the packaged object is placed in a shrink-wrap bag 1, sealed, and shrunk through a heating channel 2. Alternatively, as shown in Figure (2), the packaged item is covered with shrink film, folded into a mold 1 from the four corners down to the bottom of the packaged item, and then shrunk on a heated conveyor belt 3.

(2) Sleeve method. Wrap cylindrical or rectangular food items with tubular shrink wrap. Roll the wrap in about 20 mm and leave a 30–50 mm margin along the length. First, heat and seal both ends, then shrink the entire package as shown in Figure (3).
(3) Shrink-wrapping method. This method is used for packaging containers with edges. In this process, the lower edge of the container or tray is heated and shrunk. See Figure (4).

Heat-Shrink Heating Method
(1) Shrink tunnel heater (see figure). It consists of a heating chamber 6 lined with insulating material, a conveyor belt 7, a drive wheel 9, and a cold-air blower 8. There is no heating element 4 inside the heating chamber. Hot air circulation is provided by the fan 2 and the temperature controller 5. The packaging is fed in via the conveyor belt and heats up as it passes through the tunnel. To ensure the packaging film heats up evenly, an electric fan circulates the air. The temperature inside the chamber is stabilized by the temperature controller (temperature difference: ±5 degrees). After heating and shrinking, the cold air blower cools the packaging.

(2) Manual Heating with a Hot-Air Blower For small batches of shrink-wrapped packages that are not suitable for the construction of a dedicated heating channel, a hot-air blower can be used for manual heating. The setup of the heat gun is shown in the figure above.

Medium-sized four-side-seal packaging machine
For packages measuring 200–500 mm in width and 250–1,500 mm in length, a medium-sized four-side-seal packaging machine, as shown in the figure, can be used.

The upper and lower film rolls 3 and 8 are guided via the guide roller 7 to the cross-sealer 4, where they are heat-sealed. The material 2 is fed via the conveyor belt 1. After it has traveled a predetermined length along the film, the cross-sealing unit is activated to complete the cross-sealing of the front and rear packages and to separate them (it is also possible to complete the cross-sealing only after the longitudinal sealing and then separate the packages). Subsequently, the belt-type longitudinal sealer 5 seals the two side seams and then feeds the packages to the heating and shrinking section.

External Packaging Machines

As part of the mechanization of food packaging, the mechanization of food packaging and inner packaging developed earlier and gradually formed a complete production line integrated with the processing machinery from the previous stage. In modern times, machines for outer packaging have evolved in response to the urgent demands of industrial production development. The mechanization of outer packaging can not only reduce labor intensity but also significantly improve work efficiency.
The overpackaging process generally consists of four steps: preparing the overpackaging cartons (e.g., opening and forming stacked, flat-folded cartons); packing food containers; sealing the cartons; bundling; and four additional processes. The machines that perform these four steps are called carton formers, cartoning machines, carton sealing machines, and bundling machines (or strapping machines). Nowadays, as these machines are continuously being improved and further developed, fully automated packaging lines have emerged that combine the sorting, packing, and bundling of packaged food—that is, grouping small food items into cartons so that sealing and bundling are performed in a single step.
Since packaging containers include cans, bottles, pouches, boxes, cups, etc., and come in various shapes and materials, there are many types and models of overpackaging machines. However, since the processes involved in overpackaging are limited to the four aspects mentioned above, the operating principles and procedures of many similar machines are similar.

Cardboard Packaging Machine

A carton packaging machine typically packs cans, bottles, pouches, boxes, and other packaged products into corrugated cardboard cartons. The packaging method varies depending on the shape and requirements of the product. For example, bottled products are usually placed upright and, after being pushed against one another, are fed into the channel to form the desired arrangement. They are then pushed vertically into the carton, either from top to bottom or from bottom to top.

Canned goods can be packaged in a similar way to the bottled products mentioned above. Canned goods can also be rolled horizontally through the divider. The resulting arrangement corresponds exactly to the position of the carton’s opening side. The cans, lying flat and neatly arranged, are slid horizontally into the carton. For cartons with an opening on one side, the cans are pushed or picked up and placed vertically into the carton.

The carton packaging machine for dairy products in cartons is also a specialized machine. With this type of carton packaging machine, the carton is placed vertically into the carton using a gripper, collected vertically in a specific arrangement, and moved to the desired position by the machine at a predetermined time.

There are many types of cartoning machines, which can be broadly divided into three categories:
(1) Cartoning machine for corrugated cardboard boxes. The flat corrugated cardboard boxes are stacked on a rack and folded. Each time a sheet is shipped, it is erected into a box, filled with the packaged food, and then sealed. The food is placed into the box either manually or automatically.
(2) Machine for forming corrugated cardboard boxes. The corrugated cardboard box is formed in the same way as in the first type. During transport, the cardboard feeding machine operates simultaneously with the conveyor belt that feeds the packaged food items. The food items are filled into the boxes and then sealed.
(3) Packaging machine for corrugated cardboard boxes. This machine places individual sheets of corrugated cardboard with fold lines one at a time onto a frame, pushes the packaged food items onto a specific section of the box, and forms the box according to the fold lines. The box is then sealed with adhesive. After sealing, the box is unloaded. This is generally referred to as the push-wrapping process.
Since the purpose of packaging is to protect food from damage during transport, ensure it is delivered undamaged to the retailer, and make it easier to unpack before sale, packaging technology must be continuously improved.
Depending on the packaging process, the following types of machines can be distinguished: folding packaging machine, compression packaging machine, and case packaging machine.

Sealing Machine

The sealing machine is a pneumatic, automatic sealing device. It is used to seal and label cardboard boxes filled with canned goods or other packaged foods.
The machine's structure consists mainly of rollers, lifting sleeve cylinders, step conveyors, folding blades, upper and lower paper tray racks, upper and lower water cylinders, printing rollers, upper and lower paper cutters, pneumatic systems, etc.
The machine’s main operation is as follows: The open carton, filled with canned goods, pouches, boxes, and other packaged foods, is rotated from the carton carrier plate of the carton packaging machine directly onto the machine’s roller. The operator of the carton packaging machine then releases the pressure, and the carton slides forward along the inclined roller and contacts the travel switch. At this point, the lifting cylinder at the bottom of the roller begins to rise under the action of the pneumatic system, and the carton is transported to the top of the ring beam by the step conveyor. As soon as the cardboard box is in place, the signal is activated, the command to proceed is issued, and the step conveyor begins to move.
The step-type conveying mechanism is driven by the cylinder to move two push rods back and forth. Each time a carton arrives, the mechanism moves once, and the carton is gradually pushed from this process to the next by the push claws on the push rod. The open carton is pushed into the arched frame by the push claw of the step-type conveyor. First, the small folding tongue at the rear of the box is swung by the folding hook, and the folding tongue at the front of the carton is closed by the fixed folding device during the pushing process. After that, the large folding flap of the box is closed by the folding plates on both sides and pressed flat by the baffle at the rear. The carton is pushed under the pressure roller and conveyed to the next sealing process. The paper tape used as the seal is loaded onto the upper paper tray. After the paper tape is fed through the bracket, it is moistened by the water coating device, then guided to the top of the carton (the bottom of the carton also has the same sealing device), and pressed onto the box by the upper pressure roller. As the box is transported forward by the conveyor’s push claw, the paper tape is gradually applied to the box from front to back. The push claw of the step-type conveyor then pushes the carton forward to the paper cutting section. After the box comes to a stop, the cutter moves downward (the lower cutter moves upward) to cut the paper tape. The rollers installed on both sides of the cutter then roll the paper strips from the rear end of the previous box and the front end of the next box onto the box, so that the upper and lower seals form a “door” and ”U” shape to seal the box. The sealed carton is then transported to the next process by the push claw. If a self-adhesive seal is used, the water coating device can be omitted.
To improve production efficiency, automatic carton-sealing machines are generally used in production.

Strapping Machine

A strapping machine is used to strap cartons or packages of various sizes with ropes and straps. Strapping machines have evolved rapidly and are available in a wide variety of types and models. The main classification methods for machine types are: A. Based on the machine’s level of automation, strapping machines are classified as automatic or semi-automatic; B. Based on the method of feeding the strapping band, strapping machines are classified as penetration-type or wrap-around-type; C Based on the material of the strapping, a distinction is made between paper strapping machines and automatic strapping machines.

Graduation

The use of labeling, shrink-wrapping, sealing, and strapping machines in the packaging industry significantly increases the speed, accuracy, and efficiency of packaging processes. Whether it’s applying precise labels to containers, fitting shrink film to products, securely sealing cartons, or strapping for transport—these machines work hand in hand to ensure your products are packaged safely and professionally. With the ongoing trend toward automation, packaging machines will play an increasingly important role in optimizing production lines and meeting the growing demand for high-quality packaging solutions across all industries.

Discover different types of packaging machines, including labeling, shrink-wrapping, sealing, and strapping machines.
