Setup of the Roasted Coffee Line
The line consists of four sections: a bucket elevator or belt conveyor for gentle product feeding, Multi-head scale for dosing, a vertical form-fill-seal machine to form the pouches, and a date printer for the best-by date.
The multi-head weigher doses beans with an accuracy of ±1 g for fill weights ranging from 250 to 1,000 g—standard in the industry for 10 weighing heads. The drop height between the scale and the filling hopper determines the percentage of broken beans: Short transfer sections and curved drop tubes keep the percentage of broken beans low.
Flavor Preservation: Valve, Film, and Gas Flushing
Three elements ensure the flavor:
- One-way degassing valve: Freshly roasted beans release carbon dioxide for up to several days. The valve lets CO₂ out but doesn't let oxygen in—without the valve, the bag would swell up.
- Laminated film with a barrier layer: Protection from light and oxygen provided by an aluminum or EVOH core layer; an opaque outer layer protects the oils in the beans.
- Nitrogen flushing: During sealing, N₂ flushes the bag and reduces the residual oxygen to below 2 %. Gas flushing is required for ground coffee and recommended for whole beans.

What You Shouldn't Underestimate About Roasted Coffee
Real-world data from project runs: Bean breakage increases with every bend in the product path—transfer pieces cost less than rejected product. The valve must be compatible with the sealing process; otherwise, it will leak. And the recipe changes: Anyone who later adds ground coffee or coffee pods will need a machine that can be retrofitted with screw feeders. When a VFFS Isn't Suitable for Coffee
For very small production runs of fewer than 20 pouches per minute and frequent product changes, a semi-automatic machine or vacuum packaging in cans is more cost-effective. VFFS is not suitable for pasteurized products or liquids (coffee concentrate)—in these cases, a dedicated liquid packaging line is the best solution.
